Akufo-Addo Opens ECOWAS Extraordinary Summit To Deal With Mali Political Crises

Today, Sunday, May 30, 2021, President Akufo-Addo met with the leaders of some West African countries. The summit was meant to address the political crises in Mali. It can be recalled that last year Mali witnessed a coup d’état. The Economic Community of West African States intervened and a transition team was put in place. 

However, barely months later the president of the transition team and the prime minister resigned. This has occasioned another crisis in Mali. Upon advice from former Nigerian president, Goodluck Jonathan based on his visit to Mali days ago, President Akufo-Addo invited other heads of states of West Africa to Accra for a summit.

President Akufo Addo reminded them of the resolutions that were taken when they met the last time and asked for their commitment as they discussed the situation. After the initial address, the session was closed to the press leaving only heads of states and representatives of ECOWAS states to discuss.

President Akufo-Addo said that at the end of the closed door meeting, the heads of state will release a joint communique on what they arrived it. among the West African leaders present include leaders from The Gambia, Burkina Faso, sierra Leone, Togo, Niger, Nigeria among others
