Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia; the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has broken his silence on the Cape Coast High Courts orders, for a by-election in Assin North Constituency in the Central Region of Ghana.
Mr. Asiedu Nketia’s comment came following the orders by the Cape Coast Court High court on Wednesday 28 July 2021; annulling the 2020 parliamentary election result, in the Assin North, and ordering fresh elections to be conducted in the constituency.
According to a Starr FM report, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, popularly known as General Mosquito stated that, “We know that the EC, Government, and Judiciary can collude to disfavor our interest in this saga but we’ll fight hard in court because that is our only option. I won’t be surprised if the EC may swerve us and go ahead with a by-election even when we’re in court but we will stay the course in our legal battle”.
“NDC will stop at nothing to ensure the verdict of the Cape Coast High court in relation to the dual citizenship case of the Assin North MP is overturned”, he added.
The Assin North Constituency is one of the constituencies in the Central Region of Ghana. In the December 2020 the parliamentary election, Mr. James Gyakye Quayson-the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, won with 17, 498, representing 55.21%, whiles the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Abena Durowaa Mensash, secured 14,193, representing 44.79%.
The Cape Coast High Court presided over by Justice Kwasi Boakye; on Wednesday, July 28, 2021, ruled that, Mr. John Gyakye Quayson failed to renounce his Canadian citizenship before the elections as required by law.
Do you agree with General Mosquito, that the NDC will overturn the court’s ruling?
