The managing editor for insight news paper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr has fumes at the New Patriotic Party government for "illegally" going to pay salary for presidential spouses. Information minister Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has disclosed that the august house of Parliament has approved allowances for Presidential spouses and Kwesi Pratt Jnr has stated that, NPP government has engaged in an "illegality" and this could be a major problem in the future.
Kwesi Pratt Jnr speaking on Metro TV good morning Ghana show today, Wednesday, 7th July, 2021 questioned that who put the president wife into the article 71 office holders list? Kwesi Pratt Jnr questioned the New Patriotic Party government led by President Nana Akufo-Addo again that is that how to amend the 1992 constitution?
According to Kwesi Pratt Jnr, Government have effectively amended the 1992 constitution without the notice of Ghanaians and said that the constitution did not said every four years the president must set up committees. He said the constitution did not said the president should increased article 71 office holders salaries every year. He added that the constitution did not said that the wife of the president is part of the article 71 office holders list so how did they managed to add them to the committee?
"Some of the things are clear violations of the 1992 constitution and getting into the bottom line, it is unfair to the working people of Ghana" Kwesi Pratt Jnr angrily said.
He added that " workers are told that because of covid-19 situations their salaries can't be increased beyond the threshold but those who set up the laws can increase their own salaries which is bad. This is an illegality against the constitution."
He told Ghanaians that the president is not bound to marry only one wife and asked that what if in the future a president marries more than one wife, are they going to pay salary to all of them? He said they should remember that if the president is a Moslem, he can marry up to four wife and the decision they have taken is against the constitution of Ghana.
Meanwhile, the committee that have approved allowances for Presidential Spouses has been told that they have no right to recommend salary increment for workers as it has been told that, public servants see lowest pay rise in 10 years which is 4% increment in 2021 and 7% in 2022.
