I didn’t spend GH 1million on Ashanti NPP executives: Dr Afriyie Akoto reacts

Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, has officially responded to media reports regarding his presidential aspirations.

According to the constitution of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), nominations have not been opened for interested candidates to declare their plans to run for any position in the party, according to a press release signed and released by him on March 18, 2021. It is therefore unfortunate for someone to try to give the impression that I held a meeting to announce my candidacy for the party's flagbearership,” he said.

“I have taken due note of an information circulating on both traditional and social media claiming to be a review of an outcome of a meeting held with party executives in the Ashanti Region ‘to announce my bid for the flagbearer position of the New Patriotic Party,” Dr Afriyie Akoto said, without specifying categorically whether he was interested in the position when it comes up for consideration.

The narrators mischievously tried to cause public disdain for my person by making outrageous statements, for reasons best known to them,” he said.

“I decided to go to Kumasi and have some rest during the weekend and try to recover from a fever I was running after I attended the budget reading in parliament on Friday 12 March, 2021," he wrote, confirming he met some NPP executives in Kumasi.

As a former member of the region's parliament and a senior member of this administration, I agreed to give an audience to some party executives who had been calling for a meeting to discuss the party's welfare. Such events, on the other hand, usually end with a sum of money being provided as transportation to guests who have traveled from far and large.

The "narrators claim that I spent up to GH1,000,000.00 at the said meeting to announce my bid for the position," according to Dr. Afriyie Akoto. This is not only inaccurate, but it's also possible that the assertions are based solely on the author's imagination. In my home, I met with 17 constituency executives from each of the 47 constituencies, which meant I was receiving about 700 delegates.

"I don't have the room in my house to host such a big party." How can anyone believe I paid these NPP executives nearly a million Ghana cedis in one day?

“I believe in decent political dialogue free of threats, propaganda, and mudslinging,” Dr. Akoto concluded. “I would therefore urge all, including the media, to refrain from actions that have the potential to derail the government's historical gains” and ensure that progress continues.
