We Must Deal With NPP MPs Before Any Negotiations On The Budget - Murtala Mohammed

There continues to be an unnecessary rancor in Parliament over the approval of the 2022 fiscal year budget. The decision made by the 1st Deputy Speaker in the absence of Rt. Hon Alban Bagbin did not go down well with the Minority Caucus in Parliament as they have fiercely protested against the decision and called for its reversal.

The Minority Caucus appears to be bent on getting the decision overturned after they described the procedures as illegal and unconstitutional. However, amidst the chaos and brouhaha, a 20 non-partisan member committee has been instituted to launch investigations into the happenings in Parliament.

Earlier today, December 4, 2021, highly respected Member of Parliament for Tamale Central constituency, Honourable Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed was interviewed alongside Professor Gyampo on TV3's KeyPoints show. The discussion got heated after the NDC lawmaker opposed the idea of setting up a Committee without punishing the majority Caucus.

According to Murtala Mohammed, the happenings in Parliament during the last sitting is a gross illegality and should not go unpunished. He believes that, the lawmakers engaged in an unconstitutional and unfounded attempt to overturn a decision that was legally made by the speaker.

Murtala Mohammed indicated that, only the speaker Alban Bagbin should be allowed to deal with the situation. While completely disagreeing with the justifications given by the Majority Leader, Honourable Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, he interpreted the standing orders and credited his view as the correct way to interpret the orders.

Speaking further, Murtala Mohammed called for punishment of the majority MPs who supported the 1st Deputy Speaker, Joe Wise to make such an unconstitutional decision. He said, "The only why he counted himself is because he knew that they did not have the numbers to make the decision. They engaged in complete illegality. That is why I say we cannot get into negotiations without first dealing with the people who did it."
