He did not speak for us – Oti Regional House of Chiefs calls out "Mahama’s favorite" chief

The Oti Regional House of Chiefs has dissociated itself from the promise of 50,000 votes in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, in the region, made to former President John Dramani Mahama by Nana Kanawo Chadere, a Challa chief.

The chief made the promise when the former President, who led the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to the 2020 general election, visited the area to say “thank you” to the people for the votes they gave to him.

Nana Chadere was reported to have said that but for the former President’s God-fearing nature and respect for democracy, the country would have gone up in flames, repeating the discredited lie that the election was stolen.

Addressing a press conference at Dambai, Nana Mprah Besemuna III, the Omanhene of Krachi Traditional Area and President of the Oti Regional House of Chiefs, said Nana Chadere, spoke for himself and not the House.

He is not a member of the regional house of chiefs and could therefore not have claimed to be speaking for the house.

Nana Besemuna said whatever was said by Nana Chadere - opinion or statement made, did not in any way reflect the position of the regional house chiefs. They were entirely his.

Relatedly, the leadership of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Oti region has chided Nana Chadere for the statements he made.

Mr. Seidu Musah, the Regional Communications Director of the Party, said the Challa chief, was a known sympathizer, who in the run up to the 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections was given a Navara Pick-up by the then Mahama-led government.

He went on to say that Nana Chadere has been nursing the hope and praying that the NDC would come back to power in year 2024 so that he would be elevated to the status of Omanhene.

The NPP Regional Communications Director, said the hope and dream of Nana Chadere would continue to remain a dream. The people in the Oti Region, he explained, had every reason to be grateful to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for creating the Oti Region for them.

This was something the people had been struggling for and which had eluded them for 50 years.

Former President Mahama has refused to accept that he lost the 2020 presidential election to President Nana Akufo-Addo. He filed an election petition with the Supreme Court, seeking an order by the court for a re-run of the presidential race, with himself, and President Nana Akufo-Addo, as the only two candidates but his petition was thrown out by the apex court because it lacked substance.

He has been using every meeting with his party members and supporters to discredit the conduct of the general election by the election management board, the Electoral Commission, and its outcome.
