U/W: Women Trade Blows for Water in Wa West

Dalipuri is located in the Bankpama Electoral Area in the Wa West District of the Upper West Region. The community has a small population of about 150 people, with 23 households. The community lacks essential facilities including access to electricity and a potable water source. Women, children have to pray for raining season to come so their streams and valleys will contain enough water for them to fetch for drinking and domestic purpose.

The issue of the lack of potable water source to the community is more severe in the dry seasons as streams and valleys dried up leaving women and girls to resort to digging or earthing- out for water. Women will dig several pits in search of water. Sadly, this becomes the only source of water, and women and girls will have to form several ques in the morning, afternoon, and evening just to get a basin of water for the entire household.

The community is about 4 Km away from the black Volta and remains more vulnerable to feco-oral disease as the lack of potable water sources compromises handwashing practices a key protocol in breaking the route of transmission of feco-oral diseases and COVID- 19 Pandemic. The community stands the risk of been displaced if urgent measures are not taken to address the issue of water scarcity.

Speaking to women in the dugout serving as the only source of water in Dalipuozu, it sad to say, the community has suffered decades of water scarcity in the community. The situation is the greatest threat to human life and livestock in Dalipuozu. The community members are therefore appealing to the government, their MP, NGOs, and Philanthropists to come to their aid for redress.
