Opinion: Why Students Do Not Properly Observe Covid-19 Safety Protocols In Ghanaian Schools

After his excellency the president of the republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, declared the reopening of schools after the closure due to the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic, a lot of measures have been kept in place to ensure effective adherence to the safety protocols outlined by the Ghana Health Service(GHS) and World Health Organization(WHO).

This article, however aims to state reasons that impedes the strict adherence to the Covid-19 safety protocols by majority of the students in Ghanaian schools. Below are just but a few of the impediments;

1. Ignorance or Inadequate Sensitization

The government has provided PPEs(Personal Protective Equipments) to the schools in the country. However, most of the students, especially basic school students, have very little knowledge on the proper usage of the PPEs provided.

This is one of the causes of the increased number of cases recorded in our Schools. I urge government to provide a comprehensive education and sensitization on the use of the PPEs and on the reality of Covid-19 as well.

2. Students observe the safety protocols only when at school

This is where the problem lies. In most schools, students strictly observe the safety measures kept in place by the GHS and WHO. The reality is that, these students who duly observe the safety protocols while at school do not do same while at home. Students should be made aware that, Covid-19 is not only in school but everywhere. It is good for them(students) to observe the safety measures everywhere they are, especially when with people.

3. Inadequate number of furniture and classrooms

For government to fully ensure the effective observance of Covid-19 in the Ghanaian schools, there is the need to increase the number of furniture and classroom blocks for the schools.

Though most schools yearn to observe the safety protocols duly, they don't have all what it takes. The inadequate number of furniture has prevented the students from observing social distancing while in the classroom. And even schools that have enough furniture do not have enough classroom blocks to divide students to ensure the effectiveness of social distancing. It would hence be pertinent enough for government to provide furniture and build more classroom blocks to the schools lagging behind.

4. Inappropriate usage of face masks

Mask is supposed to be used for a limited time. If you wear it for a long time, oxygen in the blood reduces, oxygen to the brain reduces, and you will start feeling weak, and this may lead to death. Pull the nose mask off when you are alone. I see a lot of people in their cars wearing face masks.

Others wear face masks while in the room or other private places alone.

Do not use face mask when alone. Only use it in a crowded place and when in close contact with one or more persons.

Reduce the use of it while isolation isolating. Keep two or more face masks with you and always change the mask every four to five(4-5) hours.

We are fighting Corona virus but please, don't die from hypoxia.
