Many Ghanaians were made to believe that the President, H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is determined to downsize his government in his second term. He had via his Director of Communications, Eugene Arhin, justified that the number was meaningful given the work he has to execute in his final term and the financial burden resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.
However this expectation of having that sort of a lean government is practically no different from today. The latest appointments for Deputy Ministers has three sectors loaded with three deputy ministers each, and some nine others having two deputy ministers designated.
The three ministries with three deputies are; Trade and Industry, Energy, and Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development. This in addition to the sector ministers, makes twelve public servants/appointees of government in just three ministries.
There are no justifications yet for now for the size of deputy ministerial appointments but the conclusions drawn by the masses are just troubling.
The Energy Ministry has; Mohammed Amin Adams, William Owireku Aidoo, and Andrew Egyapa Mercer, all to deputize Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.
In the Ministry for Trade and Industry; Nana Dokua Asiamah Adjei, MIchael Okyere Baafi, and Herbert Krapa, are all going to deputize, Alan K. Kyeremanten.
Finally, for the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development which is being headed by Dan Botwe, these persons; Augustine Collins Ntim, Osei Bonsu Amoah, and Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah, will be his deputies.
Should the list be populated for the other nine ministries with two deputies, I guess you might get more angrier reading through it. But then you can do your checks from the source.
In the coming weeks, these Deputy Ministers [nominees] will be vetted and when approved sworn-in to assist the government run its agenda for the term. Before this official list came, there were lots of noise about persons who have been appointed in advance, some of whom included Andrew Egyapa Mercer.
