The Hon. Member of Parliament for Amasaman Constituency, Akwasi Afrifa-Mensa, yesterday, Friday, April 23, 2020, paid a solidarity visit to the market women who were sacked from the roadside on Thursday, April 22, 2020, by the Ga West Municipal Assembly led by its Chief Executive.
The MP was accompanied by the Constituency Secretary, the Constituency Research Officer, an Electoral Area Coordinator for Amassman and other party executives and members.
He apologized profusely to the visibly agitated and crestfallen women, especially those whose wares were destroyed with reckless abandon by some members of the Assembly . The market women have been staunch supporters and very vociferous campaigners for the MP and the Party. He assured them he would put in all the necessary efforts to get them a place.
Hon. Afrfifa-Mensa minced no words in expressing his displeasure about the fact that an exercise, which has dire political and economic ramifications, could take place within his constituency without his knowledge. What he considered even more sad was the fact that just last week, he sat at the same table with the MCE at a general assembly meeting but he, the representative of the people, was not informed that such an exercise was in the offing.
Immediately after his meeting with the stranded market women, he visited the Amasaman New Market to assess the situation there and the possibility of accommodating some of the women at the market. He spoke with the Chairman of the market who revealed that all the spaces in the market have already been allocated. However, the Assembly had planned to move the meat sellers to a different location so that the resultant space would be used to accommodate the evicted market women.
Hon. Afrifa-Mensa wondered why that arrangement wasn't carried through by the Assembly before the eviction of the women.
Finally, he took the opportunity to interact with some of the women at the new market.
