President Of NUGS In Ukraine Replies Afenyo Markin Over E-Levy Revenue Needed To Evacuate Ghanaians

Yesterday, Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo Markin generated some controversy when he suggested that many are calling for an evacuation of Ghanaians in Ukraine and yet forgetting that there is no money. He noted that the E-levy revenue could have helped in assisting Ghanaian students in Ukraine but this isn’t so because the levy is yet to be passed.

In an interview today, Friday, February 25, 2022, 2 leaders of Ghanaian students in Ukraine shared their thoughts on ongoing events in Ukraine. Johnnie Hughes queried them if they have heard the comment by Afenyo Markin that the passage of the E-levy could have been a source of revenue to assist.

In response, Mr Pobee, the NUGS President in Ukraine dismissed the comments and asked the leaders of Ghana not to politicize issues. He noted that this was not the time to play because there is a reality on the ground to be discussed.

“We should be concerned about the safety of Ghanaians. We don’t need to politicize this issue because it is not political. It is a reality. We shouldn’t even mention the E-levy. Even if it is passed today, how long will it take to generate that money? Mr. Pobee said.

Mr. Pobee’s comments were supported by Benjamin Boateng, PRO for NUGS in Ukraine who also called for government assistance to alleviate the plight of Ghanaians who have been left stranded.
