YENDI: Failed MCE Faces Anxious Wait for Second Round of Voting

The Municipal Chief Executive Nominee for the Yendi has been rejected by the Assembly Members of the Yendi Municipal Assembly. Out of a total of 41 members, Hon Ahmed Abubakari Yussif Kums, managed the endorsement of only 21 people, a figure that goes in sharp contrast with local government act stipulation that before a member is approved as nominee, two - third of the entire members of the Assembly should have voted for him.

The election supervised by the Northern Regional Director of the Electoral Commission will be recalled in ten days time and the nominee will still partake in the exercise as he garnered more 50 percent of the votes. Alhaji Abubakari Yussif, a veteran NPP member, was appointed Municipal Chief Executive for the Yendi Municipality and was easily approved by the Assembly, paving way for him to serve from 2017 to date. Prior to his reappointment, many people had openly expressed their desire to have him changed but the president thought it wise to renominate him. He was nominated against the people's favourite, Bawa Zakaria Kpana, who is the Yendi Constituency Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party. The MCE's failure to garner the requisite votes will be viewed as a slap to the president and the very few people that supported his candidature.
