Kumasi residents suffer as ECG and Ghana Water trade blames over 'Dumsor' and acute water shortage

Residents in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi has for the past two weeks been at the receiving end of incessant power cuts and water shortages across its populous municipalities and communities, causing a situation of unease in the city.

They have blamed the Ghana Ghana Water Company Limited and the Electricity Company of Ghana for the development.

But the Ghana Water Company Ltd in the Ashanti region has blamed the acute water shortage in the Kumasi metropolis and its environs on the incessant power cuts from the Electricity Company of Ghana.

Commercial Manager for the GWCL in the Ashanti South Region, Mr. Collins Theophilus told Nana Kwame Adjei Bohyen on Pure Morning Drive this morning that the company has no fault at its Barekese and Owabi stations but the inability of the ECG to provide them with electricity is the cause of the acute water shortage that is biting hard at residents.

Water has not flown through the taps in prime areas like Bantama, Kwadaso,Ahodwo, Patasi, Krofrom and Edwenase for close to two weeks, forcing residents to have to part with huge sums of money to buy mineral water and pay for tanker service for water.

But the PRO of the ECG in the Ashanti region, Mr. Erasmus Kyere Baidoo also told Nana Kwame Adjei Bohyen that it is the Ghana Grid Company that is unable to supply them with power for onward distribution to Ghana Water and other key establishments.

He says the Gridco has not given the cg any tangible reasons for its failure to supply the Ashanti region with adequate power to serve the people and institutions.
