US Ambassador tells Otumfuo II Ghana is unable to fight galamsey because of the powerful force backing

The US (US) Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, has encouraged the public authority of Ghana to invest more energy in the battle against the threat of unlawful limited scope mining ('galamsey') in the country.

As per her, Ghana was not taking any huge steps in that frame of mind against the danger on the grounds that only the illegal miners ('galamseyers') are captured while the strong powers behind them are not arrested.

Virginia Palmer, who offered these comments when she paid a courtesy call to Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, added that assuming the public authority neglects to find dire ways to stop 'galamsey', the nation will be in some serious emergency soon.

"We had a legislative designation from our Place of Delegates, Natural Resource Committee, that was here about fourteen days prior. Also, they were investigating water contamination, the effect on fisheries from unlawful mining.

"This (galamsey) is something, I figure Ghanaians should be forceful in battling and upholding guidelines that you do have.

"The actual galamseyers are individuals who need to get by. I think the galamseyers are not dynamic in making it happen but rather the powers behind them are the ones really liable for the wrongs. To be sure, they are unleashing truly ecological devastation on your streams which is affecting your cocoa crops. These things will have truly unfortunate results on the economy of Ghana," she said.

On his part, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, addressed why Ghana as a nation has neglected to stop the danger of 'galamsey' even after the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has placed his political profession on the line to stop it.

Asantehene likewise addressed why the security contraption in these 'galamsey' regions and the taskforce set up by the public authority have neglected to stop the threat.

He insinuated that small scale mining was something that had been finished for serveral years however never to the burden of the climate.

"It ('galamsey') has reached a place where individuals are currently utilizing hardware what not. They couldn't care less about the climate.

"However, the inquiry is who is in charge of the security around the area. From the area level to the most significant level. We are discussing 'galamsey'. The public authority set up this tactical cum police to stop galamsey. Why have we not had the option to stop it? Why?" he inquired.
