A member of NDC's legal and communications team, Lawyer Edudzi Tamakloe has disclosed that the NDC as a party is raising funds for candidate John Dramani Mahama to pay for the new Electoral Commission's [EC] filing fee for presidential candidates for the upcoming 2020 general elections.
Ghana's Electoral Commission has announced that in the 2020 elections, a Candidate aspiring to be President must pay Ghc100,00 as filing fee.
Presidential Candidates will have to cough a whopping Ghc100,000 (1billion old cedis) as filing fee.
Mrs. Jean Mensah, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission announced the fees yesterday while announcing the opening of nominations for the Presidential and Parliamentary elections today.
Parliamentary Candidates on the other hand are to pay Ghc10,000 each as filing fee.
Lawyer Edudzi Tamakloe reacting to the EC's filing fee for Ghanaians who have presidential ambitions on TV3's NewDay said the NDC doesn't have a problem raising the fees set by the EC for both the presidential and Parliamentary candidate but admitted it was too much.
He said: "The NDC doesnt have a problem with raising the Ghc100,000. Since inception, everyone knows we have been doing crowd funding for the presidential candidate."
So John Mahama am sure is not concerned so much about the fees. It is not his burden at all."
"Most of the youth in the party will raise these monies as quickly as possible. It will come in the Ghc100, Ghc200 etc. But let's call a spade a spade, the money is too much."
"2016 it was Ghc50,000 and 2020 it is Ghc100,000? In this covid-19 era?"
"I am thinking about the other smaller parties. Unless the EC says it is a way to push away the other parties in the system, it will not be easy for them to justify this amount."
But the NPP Communicator on the show, Richard Nyamah, was surprised the NDC is contradicting itself about the EC's filing fee saying that their internal presidential filing fee was Ghc400,000 and was later brought down to Ghc300,00, a 300% of the EC's amount.
For those who dont know what crowdfunding is- Crowd funding is the practice of funding a project or venture by raising small amounts of money from a large number of people.
