Former President Mahama comes under heavy attacks : Owusu Bempah rubbishes his allegations

Former President John Dramani Mahama, who led the largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections is coming under a lot of flak over his claims that the general election was rigged - victory stolen from him and his party by the election management board, the Electoral Commission (EC).

A journalist and pollster, Ben Ephson, has shot down the claim, something he sees as a deceptive tactic employed by the former president to cover up his poor showing against President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

A group aligned to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), “Fixing the Country Movement” is also accusing the former President of undermining the democratic credentials of the country in pursuit of self-serving political agenda.

The ex-President, addressing his supporters in Ho, the Volta Regional Capital, where he had gone to say “thank you” to the people for voting massively for him in the last general election, alleged that the military was used to sway the election results.

The group’s Convener, Ernest Owusu-Bempah, said the “rigged-election” claim, being bandied about by Mr. Mahama was ridiculous. He explained that former President Mahama filed an election petition at the Supreme Court, challenging the credibility but could not provide any evidence.

His election petition was thrown out by the apex court because it lacked substance. It was therefore mind-boggling that he had continued to attack the Electoral Commission (EC).

He said the deliberate attacks on the Commission was not helpful to the democratic gains, the West African country had made.

Mr. Owusu-Bempah, said they were surprised that the former President had been castigating the very electoral body, he had in year 2016, tagged as one of the best in the world.

They were seeing a display of double standards by Mr. Mahama. Under his watch the EC was perfect but not under President Nana Akufo-Addo.

He said the ex-President’s “utterances and baseless rants highlight the weaknesses in our democracy and bring into contempt the office, he once occupied”.

Mr. Ephson, earlier, speaking to a Kumasi-based radio station, warned that former President Mahama’s “rigged-election” claim, could hurt the party’s chances of winning the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

The approach the ex-President had adopted was wrong and serving parochial interest.
