Ghanaians Must Provide An Unqualified Apology To Ursula Owusu For Blasting Her (Opinion)

Many Ghanaians have expressed their views on the statement of Hon Ursula Owusu, Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West Constituency after she revealed in an interview that anyone who can send GHC100.00 a day is not poor.

"Now, if you have more than a GHC100.00 in a day, to send, then, you are not poor. Yes! So if you really are poor, and you are in a position to send a GHC100.00 a day, then we need to classify our definition of who the real beneficiaries of this are." She stated.

This statement by the Minister generated into a huge public furore or outcry with the unlettered, raining avalanche of insults on her person. Those who are in this category, cannot be blamed too much, because I think it was the GHOne interviewer who first created the very wrong impression that the Minister was reckless in her diction. The problem here has everything to do with the nominal (noun) phrase "a day".

Many have misinterpreted the phrase to mean only one day, which sementically, is far from the truth. In a day as the Minister used contextually mean each day which is also the same as every day. So is the Minister wrong to posit that if one has the wherewithal to send GHC100.00 every day, that person is not poor?

Whoever has the capacity to do this of course is not poor as Madam Owusu Ekuful rightly said. By simple calculation, who can dispute the fact a person who can remit GHC3,000.00 a month and GHC36,000.00 annually is poor. Such a person may have at least, some GHC360,000.00 (3.6 billion old Ghanaian Cedis) somewhere. Can such a person be described as poor? Of course, your answer, is as good as mine.

With this little explanation, I think Ghanaians must provide an unqualified apology to the Minister for blasting her, she has said nothing wrong on the Television programme and therefore did not merit the backlash from Ghanaians.
