Twitter headquarters in Ghana has no tangible significance, The frenzy must stop

There is a frenzy of buzz in Ghana, and particularly within the social media space about a supposed decision taken by the social media application platform, Twitter to have a presence in Africa, which they will be headquartered in Ghana.

The decision has made some Ghanaians excited, and this author, thinking about the whole frenzy for a while could not fathom the reasons why Ghanaians will enter a jubilant mood for a mere Twitter headquarters.

Twitter is an app that has its own massive benefits, no doubt. The platform is defined by its interactivity, connectedness, and user-generated content. In today’s society, the use of social media has become a necessary daily activity.

Social media in general, is typically used for social interaction and access to news and information, and decision-making. It is a valuable communication tool with others locally and worldwide, as well as to share, create, and spread information.

Social media can influence consumer’s purchase decisions through reviews, marketing tactics and advertising. Essentially, social media vastly impacts our ability to communicate, form relationships, access and spread information, and to arrive at the best decision.

Notwithstanding the above, this author is yet to find any direct benefit, be it economic or something else, that will be accrued when the app's headquarters is situated in Ghana.

Mind you, the app is an internet based platform, which operates and does perform its technical functions irrespective of where the headquarters is based. Once you have internet and data, you are good to go, and you can have access to its full benefit.

On the political front, one can understand the premature jubilation on the side of these party fanatics. It is just an opportunity to hang onto a straw and perform their praise singing function.

Otherwise, there is nothing in the news that should excite any serious mind. We must thrive to each mediocrity. Something that adds nothing and does nothing to the growth of citizens should not engage our attention.

Situating Twitter headquarters in Ghana has no direct or indirect benefit to Ghana. It is not worth the buzz.
