Top big story that shook the nation Ghana in the year 2021

The year 2021 is just some few hours to come to an end; and just like previous years, this year has been met with numerous incidents and events that kept the whole nation talking.

In this episode, we bring you the top big story that shook the entire nation and the world as a whole in the year 2021.

The ‘big clash’ in the Parliament of Ghana.

The last hours of the year 2020 and the beginning of 2021 was a real ‘clash of the titans’ in the parliament of Ghana.

After a knife-edge election 2020 to elect a president of the nation, and the 275 members of Parliament, the dawn of January 7, 2021, which gave birth to the 8th Parliament of the Fourth Republic, will go down as the most chaotic political moment in the history of Ghana, as it saw an event that usually takes less than two hours… lasting close to nine hours due to hot disagreement between the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The stories started with the confusion over who sits at the majority chamber and who goes to the Minority side. Though the two major parties had 137 seats in parliament, the NPP members believed they had to occupy the majority chamber, because the Independent candidate joined them to form the majority of 138 seats; but the MP of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), had already occupied the seats on the majority side, because they thought otherwise.

This event saw Honorable Ursula Owusu, Ablekuma West MP, sitting on the laps of male NDC MP, because according to madam Ursula, the MP was sitting on her seats.

Again the floor of parliament saw another clash, after the legitimacy Honorable James Gyakye Quayson, Assin North MP-elect, was called into question by the member of Parliament elect for Effutu constituency, Honourable Alexander Afenyo Markin.

After some hours of misunderstanding between the NPP and the NDC MPs, the Clerk of Parliament, Cyril Kwabena Oteng Nsiah, subsequently gave in and permitted the Assin North MP to vote.

After all these…when the time finally came for the election of the Speaker of the 8th Parliament, it again resulted in the ‘mother of all clashes’.

Though the voting process took place peacefully, things ‘fell apart’, when the NPP member of Parliament elect for Tema West, Honorable Carlos Ahenkorah, snatched and bolted with some ballot papers during the collation process, but the action was fiercely resisted by the NDC members of parliament.

The chaos was so much such that, it saw a military team storming the chamber but left 10 minutes later.

After all the misunderstandings, the clashes and a fierce contest between the incumbent NPP’s Speaker Aaron Mike Oquaye and the NDC MP, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, finally emerged as the winner, and sworn in as the Speaker of Ghana 8th parliament.
