Investigate And Remove Alban Bagbin From Office- Fixing The Country Movement Demands

Ghana’s Parliament has been charged to take drastic action against the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, for constitutional breaches he committed last Friday, during the final consideration of the 2022 Budget Statement and Economic Policy. The Convenor for the Fixing the Country Movement, Ernest Owusu Bempah argues that Mr Bagbin cannot be pardoned for what has done.

According to him, Mr Bagbin must be investigated and possibly removed from office on grounds of breaching the constitution and orders of the House he presides. Additionally, the Honourable Speaker is being cited for attempting to covertly undermine the Presidency, an act, Mr Owusu Bempah noted is akin to a constitutional coup d’etat.

In a Facebook post, the Convenor of the Fixing the Country Movement stressed that there is every reason, given recent events that, the Speaker and his Minority group [Members of Parliament of the National Democratic Congress] are in connivance to assault the Presidency of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo.

“Fixing the country Movement deems Bagbin’s extraordinary claim of parliamentary privilege as a speaker, to covertly attempt to engage in constitutional coup d'etat with the connivance of the minority caucus during the passage of the 2022 Budget statement, not only as a disgrace to the institution of parliament but sees it as an affront to due process.

“Let’s face it, Bagbin has belligerently defied the law and thrust aside the Constitution in an attempt to assault the Akufo-Addo presidency in a fashion akin to coup d'etat,” he argued.

Mr Owusu Bempah indicated that the Speaker in his judgment that discarded the 2022 Budget and Economic Policy on Friday was in total defiance of Article 104 of the Constitution, and Order 109 of the Standing Orders of Parliament. He charged Parliament to urgently subject the Speaker to investigations and the necessary processes taken to impeach or remove him from office.

“Parliament House was designed as a classical House consecrated to democracy, which is why the speaker's unprecedented assault on our democracy ought to be investigated and if possible remove from office.”
