The presidential primary race of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2024 general election is shaping up into a grueling contest as a former Finance Minister and ex- Governor of the Bank of Ghana throws his hat in the ring.
Dr. Kwabena Duffour has cleared any doubts about his intention to lead the party to the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.
The former Finance Minister had earlier been seen in a short video, canvassing for more support for the NDC.
He says he is going to gladly accept the challenge to be the NDC’s presidential candidate.
"I was the Finance Minister, so I was in politics, but we have not started talking about the NDC presidential race yet, if we get there and I am given the nod, why not."
He said this in a response to a question by a journalist on the sidelines of a public event – a lecture he delivered in Accra on the topic “The Ghanaian dream: transforming the economy through the creation of jobs and opportunities for all”.
This publicly stated position taken by the former Finance Minister, is likely to send jitters among some of the diehard supporters of former President John Dramani Mahama, including the Member of Parliament for Odododiodio, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, who do not want anybody to contest him for the NDC’s presidential ticket.
Dr Duffour told journalists that he would gladly accept the decision by the party’s delegates to lead them to the 2024 general election.
If given the opportunity to become the NDC flagbearer, he would be picking one of these two people – Alban Sumani Kingsford Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, or Haruna Iddrisu, the Minority Leader, as his running mate. The pair, he said, were doing a fantastic job, flying the flag of the NDC high.
Dr Duffuor, who hails from Kumawu in the Ashanti Region, served in the position of Finance Minister during the Atta-Mills Administration.
He was also one time, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana.
