I Don't Get Free Accommodation As An MP - Sam George Tells Spokesperson Of Economic Fighters League

The Member of Parliament for the Ningo Prampram Constituency, Samuel Nartey George, has responded to a supposed statement by the spokesperson for the Economic Fighters League, Nii Aryee Opare, that the benefits being enjoyed by MPs are a drain on the public purse.

According to Sam George, it is incorrect for Nii Aryee Opare to say that MPs get free cars and fuel from the government and that he doesn't get free accommodation as an MP from the government.

Sam George made this statement on the 'AM SHOW' on Joy News television this morning, 22nd November 2022, when he responded to some alleged statement by Nii Aryee Opare about the benefits of MPs.

According to Sam George, it is incorrect, untruth, and a lie for Nii Aryee Opare to say that MPs get cars that are bought and fuel for them by the government.

"No MP receives fuel for their cars Nii Arye, that's the first point. That is a lie you told and never repeat it anywhere again. Don't confuse MPs to members of the executives or members of the judiciary. Minister may get fuel, but MPs do not get fuel from the government."

Sam indicated that Nii Aryee Opare also talked about kilometric allowances for MPs. He should know that kilometric allowances are how much an MP gets when Parliament is raising and not every time the MP moves.

He revealed that Parliament rises three times in a year, so when Nii Arye said that every time they move their cars, they get kilometric allowance is a lie.

"When I went to Parliament in 2017, my allowance from Accra to Prampram as calculated to take me and back was 169 Ghana cedis. So, is that what is draining the public purse? There was a review, so when we rose recently what I got to Prampram was 585 Ghana cedis."

So, after working for 16 weeks, that is how much he got. They didn't take into consideration how much he went to the constituency within the 16 weeks, and someone like Zanetor Rawlings, whose constituency is where Parliament is located got about 120 Ghana cedis, so is that what Nii Aryee is saying is a drain on the public purse?

"It should be clear to Nii Aryee Opare that I don't get a free accommodation as a Parliamentarian."

Sam George said that he pays rent for the house he is living in, and it's is worth noting that every public service worker gets a percentage of their annual salary if they are not staying in a government bungalow as a rent allowance, so it is not an MPs thing, it is a public service thing.

Sam George reiterated that there is a lot of misconception and a lot of untruth about the statement made by Nii Aryee Opare about the benefits of MPs being a drain on the public purse.
