Former President, John Mahama Celebrates Birthday Today

Former President John Mahama was born on 29th November 1958 in Damongo, capital of West Gonja district in a political family. His father Emmanuel Adama Mahama was a Member of Parliament from the West Gonja constituency.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flag bearer turns 63 years old today, November 29, 2021.

John Dramani Mahama is a politician who rose through the ranks and became President of Ghana from July 24, 2012, to January 7, 2017.

Prior to becoming the first gentleman on the land, Mr. Mahama was Member of Parliament for Bole Bamboi in the Northern Region. In 1996 he was elected to Parliament under the banner of the National Democratic Congress (NDC); he was re-elected in 2000 and 2004. He also became Communications Minister from 1998 to 2001.

While in Parliament he held several posts, including Minister of Communications (1998–2001), before being chosen as the vice presidential candidate on the NDC ticket in 2008 with John Evans Atta Mills. Mills won the December 2008 presidential election, and he and Mahama were inaugurated on January 7, 2009.

He became vice president of Ghana in 2009. After the death of Pres. John Evans Atta Mills in July 2012, Mahama ascended to the presidency. He was elected president later that year and served until 2017.

He is also vyed to become president again in the 2020 election on the ticket of the NDC but lost to Nana Akuffo-Addo of the current ruling NPP.

John Dramani Mahama is happily married to Lordina Mahama and the couple’s have been together since 1992. They have five children - Shafik, Shahid, Sharaf, Jesse and Farida.

John Mahama attended primary school at the Achimota School in Accra and attended the Ghana Secondary School in Tamale. He received a bachelor’s degree in history in 1981 from the University of Ghana, Legon, where he also completed postgraduate studies in communication in 1986.

Mahama taught high-school history for a few years before pursuing a postgraduate degree in social psychology from the Institute of Social Sciences in Moscow, which was awarded in 1988.
