President Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo is in his second term as the first gentleman of the country. This has paved the way for the ruling New Patriotic Party to elect a new flag bearer to lead the party to the 2024 General Elections. Though it has been barely nine months since the nation last visited the polls, scores of names who desire to lead the party have popped up, the Vice-president and the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia and Alan Kyeremateng are considered favorites to succeed His Excellency Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo.
Nana Addo, therefore, came under severe criticism when he introduced Alan Kyeremateng and Owusu Afriyie as people who aspire to occupy his position to the Ashantehene, Otumfour Osei Tutu II. During Nana Addo's 4-day tour of the Ashante Region, the president said “I am here with the Minister of Transport, Minister for Works and Housing, the National Security Boss, Chairman One; Wontumi, the Food and Agriculture Minister; Owusu Afriyie, who wants to be President. I also have here with me someone who has long eyed the presidential seat, the Minister of Trade and Industry; Alan Kyeremanten, a very hard-working man. All of them are doing a good job”.
Though the president has come out to unequivocally deny that he supports anybody to inherit his position, people are of the view that the statement should not be taken lightly since there is more to it than meet the eyes. In reaction to this on the Onua Maakye Show today October 5, Yaa Titi cautioned the Vice-president to advise himself if the president didn't publicly declare his aspiration to contest for the flagbearership of the party, despite it being an open secret. "If the president could not throw his support behind you in public, and probably supports you behind the scenes, then you must advise yourself", she said
