INTRODUCTION
After Former President Agyekum Kufuor entered his final years in office, there is the concern on who to take over from him. President Akufo-Addo and Alan Kyremanteng was the two people that came on peoples mind. In fact, they are the most popular personalities who has showed interest to lead the party.
The Party organizes an internal elections to elect party leaders and the Flag-bearer, who will represent them on the December, 2008, Presidential elections. President Nana Akufo-Addo was elected to lead the party in the elections, but he unfortunately lost to the late John Atta Mills. This brought several reactions from the party and the populace.
Again, he represented the party in 2013 presidential General elections but lost to Former President John Mahama. The rumors and the complains increased in the party and the country at large. Then the surprises started coming.
THE BIG SURPRISES
First of all, many people say Nana Akufo-Addo is not destined to become president so the NPP should drop him for another person. The party proved that he is a Presidential material and they believe in him massively. He beats an incumbent president and took the seat in 2016 general elections and hold on to it again in 2020 elections.
Again, the party proposed Free Senior High School in their 2016, 2012, manifesto but many stood against it and said is impossible. The Free SHS is in operation from 2017 till date. It started when Ghana is under International Monetary Fund (IMF), and even covid-19 challenges could not compel the government to cancel the program.
Similarly, when the reinstatement of Teacher and Nursing Training Allowances was promised in 2016, it received the same reactions and oppositions like the above proposal. Many think it can’t be possible because of our economic challenges, but even under covid-19 is not cancel.
In addition, the Government introduced drones for carrying medical equipment, medicine and blood. People criticizes the idea, by complaining about the cost involved, and also saying there other things Ghana need that the money could be used for. The government went ahead and hire Zipline Company for the program, and is currently serving Ghanaians in the health sector.
Also, when the government introduced National Builders Corps (NABCO) to reduce graduate unemployment in the country, many stood against it. Now, the program is working effectively from around 2018 till now. There are plans to absorb them into the Public Sector.
Moreover, the government made the intention to procure Ambulances to all Constituencies across the country but got oppositions. People suggest the government repair the old ones, and use the money for new ambulances to rather build new hospitals and clinics. The government went ahead to bring the abundances in excess of about 15 instead of 275 constituencies, which are all in operation currently.
Also, the government introduced 1 District 1 Factory, but many spoke against it based on the financial and trust issues. Currently, more than 50 factories has been built and in operation, like Ekumfi juice factory and many others. The initiative is under the supervision of Trade and Industry Ministry.
Furthermore, 1 Village 1 Dam was introduced to help Farmers at the Northern part of the country, under the then Ministry of Special Initiatives. People spoke against it and others want to stampede the process, but about 100 is currently constructed and many are under construction to be completed soon.
When the government made the intention to facilitate National Digital Property Addressing System (NDPAS), many people could not see it use. Now, you cold sit in your house and get your address, without stress by downloading the app or using the browser.
Finally, the Zongo Development Fund was introduced, but many see it as a discrimination against the other communities. People thought it can’t yield the result is created for or the purpose. Now, the fund is used to undertake projects like schools, toilet, sports activities, etc., in the Zongo communities and also give scholarships and many more.
