We are given Free Education to People Who don't need it - Mahama Ayariga Speaks
Free Senior High School Policy Introduced by the government in 2018 has received a lot of criticism and continues to receive public criticism from renowned politicians in the country.
Many of them have criticized the government for making free for all including the Minister of finance who belongs to the government.
The Minister of finance, Ken Ofori Atta who publicly stated that, he can afford to pay school fees, he doesn't see why government should pay school fees for his children.
On TV3 weekend show 'Key Point' which is aired live on every Saturday, discussed the topic "PAYING FOR COVID RELATED EXPENSES" should Ghanaians be taxed for Freebies?. The host of the program Abena Tabi and her panel members Mahama Ayariga, Daniel Okyem Aboagye and Julius Gyima a tax expert.
Mahama Ayariga, member of Parliament for Bawku Central had his take on the topic for discussion.
Mahama Ayariga stated that "We are given free education to people who don't need it", he sighted example that the share owner of TV3 doesn't need free education for his children, there are about thirty percent of Ghanaians who don't need free education. They should have opted to pay for the seventy percent of Ghanaians who needed the free education.
The government has wasted resources on the people who don't need free education and now taxing the poor to recover the lost.
The amount of money spent on the children whose parents could afford free education and pay for others could have been used to build hospitals, schools and etc.
In my own perspective on the member of Parliament for Bawku Central analysis on free education, The children of the rich people in Ghana are also Ghanaians who deserved to be taken care of by the government. Taken them out of a government policy for all Ghanaians is a discrimination. They also pay tax just as any other Ghanaian and deserve to benefit from any government social intervention.
His comment should have been an appeal for support from the rich people who have their children in the Free Senior High School policy to support the schools.
The government has introduced a number of taxes which many Ghanaians believe the government is taken back from them the Freebies given to them as a COVID-19 stimulus package.
According to Mahama Ayariga, few people enjoyed free Electricity and water and all Ghanaians are to pay for it. Many communities in Ghana have no Electricity and access to water why should they be made to pay for those who used electricity and water for free.
