It is a little over 2 years to the next elections. Despite this, political parties are gearing up for the challenge ahead. The NDC will seek to return to power under the leadership of former president John Mahama. It is expected that Prof Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang will partner the former president in 2024. However, even before that there are other personalities who will seek to challenge them.
One of the leading candidates aspiring to wrestle power from John Mahama and lead the NDC will be Kwabena Duffour, a former Bank of Ghana governor. Though his chances are slim he will seek to do the miraculous when the NDC goes to their congress to elect a flagbearer. On Joy News’ Upfront with Raymond Acquah, Kwabena Duffour made some interesting revelations concerning his ambition and what has gone wrong with Ghana.
According to Dr. Duffour, Ghana has had her fair share of lawyers who have been presidents and yet nothing good has come out. He cited a number of them and boldly insisted that this time the country needs someone who has a business or economic styled background. He challenged Ghanaians to try such a personality in the next election as this might eventually rescue the nation from the incessant economy challenges.
“Going forward we have had a lot of lawyers. Kufuor is a lawyer. Prof Mills was a lawyer, Nana Akufo-Addo is a lawyer. Can we try business people with experience in businesses because we are in that situation? We have reached an economist or business. Ghanaians will determine that” Dr. Duffour said.
Interestingly, Vice president Dr. Bawumia also has a business background and might fit the job. Was it the case that Duffour was campaigning for himself to be brought to power or he was canvassing for votes for Bawumia. Again Alan Kyerematen, another contender for the NPP flagbearer race also has a background in business and trade.
