Following the widely circulated and controversial first and second spouses allowance, the first lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo and the second lady, Samira Bawumia have communicated their intention to decline the offer, Asaase Radio confirms.
For some days now, media have been awash with comments about the recommendation made and endorsed by parliament to pay presidential spouses allowance under benefits paid to the siting president. According to Asaase Radio, an insider from the office of the president has hinted that the two spouses have decided to turn down the offer
They said that the two spouses are concerned with the public outcry about a decision about the report of professor Yaa Ntiamoa Baidu that has nothing to do with them
They indicated that they have managed to undertake a lot of public engagements and charity works without any allowance hence believed that turning down the offer will not prevent them from carrying out those duties
They indicated that they are uncomfortable with the disturbances the policy is causing, particularly in the political fronts and as such unwilling to accept the remuneration
They indicated categorically that, the payment approved by parliament are for the office they hold but they are exercising their rights as individuals and will not accept the payment, not that they are challenging the decision by the parliament.
