So the Member of Parliament for South Dia constituency Rockson Nelson has disclosed how Ghana Football Team was nicknamed the Black Stars of Ghana. Now prior to independence in 1957 the National football team was named The Gold Coast. The MP disclosed how a small club in Peki in the Volta Region inspired the name Black Stars.
In an interview with TV3, he said "The name Black Stars was adopted from a football club in Peki. Nkrumah had gone there to visit his friend and that was in the 50s."
He also said that at that time in Peki there was a club named the Peki Black Stars and Nkrumah found the name fascinating and gave it to the national team."
According to him, this is the true origin of the name Black Stars of Ghana. Ghana has won 4 AFCONS with the name and looks to attain more trophies in order to honor the name.
