In Ghana, all that we know is that the majority group in Parliament always chair committees. But the minority caucus are claiming they will chair approved committees and it doesn't matter who is the majority or the minority.
Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, the majority leader in Parliament has noted that claims of the minority chairing yet to be approved committees are not true. According to him, MPs of the NDC, the opposition party after winning the 2008 general election constituted the majority group in Parliament, hence, chaired all the various committees in the House.
"For the sake of transacting business, if the Fomena MP joins, that is it. You should refer to what happened in 2009, after the general election,Parliament was to be sworn with the NDC having 114 MPs. The number at that time was 230, they did not have the majority. They were joined by other parties and independent members to get the required members to be declared as the majority caucus which made them chaired all the various committees in the house. What is the difference"? He noted.
In your own thoughts, will the majority allow the minority chair a committee in the house since the leader is opposing their claims. Drop your thoughts in the comment box below and follow up for more information.
