The presiding elder of the Christian Divine Church in Tarkwa, the capital of the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality of the Western Region, has filed a complaint with the police over alleged acts of financial impropriety committed by the head of the church.
Presiding Elder David Agyekum is accusing the head of the church of funneling funds from the church account into a private company he has created with his cronies, leading to the arrest of Apostle Ebenezer Boahene, by the police in Tarkwa.
Presiding Elder David Agyekum, who is a member of the National Finance Board of the Christian Divine Church, is insisting that being a faith-based organization, does not give the chairman, the carte blanche to disregard the law and use its funds just as he pleases.
No, he is not going to accept any of that, and that, things needed to be done consistent with the law.
Apostle Agyekum cannot create a company with his cronies and divert church funds into that company.
Police Chief Superintendent George Kumah, the Tarkwa Divisional Police Commander, has confirmed the arrest of Apostle Boahene, the Chairman of the Christian Divine Church.
The unusual step taken by the elder of the church to report the head to the police for allegedly engaging in financial malfeasance, highlights the fault-lines in the church - the bitter division among the leadership.
Chief Supt. Kumah said the Christian Divine Church was struggling with a leadership crisis.
The leadership issue confronting the church is now being litigated in the court.
The Divisional Police Commander said a caution statement had been taken from Apostle Boahene and that he had been granted a self-recognizance police inquiry bail.
The Tarkwa divisional police command is now investigating the matter to determine the next line of action.
Many leaders of churches in Ghana have been accused of varying degrees of corruption.
