Eid-ul-Fitr Celebration in Kumasi

Eid-ul-Fitr is the feast or festival celebrated by Muslim to end their 29 or 30 days fasting in the month of Ramadan. It is celebrated by all Muslims worldwide and is generally called Eid but sometimes referred to by other names. Eid-ul-fitr is referred to as “Small Sallah” and Eid as “Sallah” in Ghana.

Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations in Kumasi are always memorable and the spirit of the celebration is mostly very high in Zongo communities like Aboabo, Sabon Zongo, Sawaba, Asawase, Tafoo, Moshie Zongo among others. 

The celebration this year 2022 was exceptional. Eid-ul-Fitr “Sallah” 2022 was announced to be on Tuesday, May, 3, 2022 but as on Saturday, April, 30, 2022, you could see Muslims busy buying chickens and provisions for the eid “Sallah” celebration. Super markets and malls were found full of customers purchasing stuff for the festival.

The eid prayer “Salat” was observed on Sunday, May, 1, 2022 others on Monday, May, 2, 2022 and the group observed this special Salat on Tuesday, May, 3, 2022. The celebration was massive on the last day as the streets of the above mentioned communities were full of people celebrating in different forms. 

The celebration of the Sallah was brought to an end by an event popularly in as “Gangara”

“Gangara” is a Hausa term used to mean roaming or outing. This event is mostly hosted at the kumasi Central market where a lot Islamic chiefs representing various tribes come to wish Muslims and all Ghanaian eid Mubarak as they sit or stand in their moving vehicles or horses. 

Eid “Sallah” in kumasi is always special but this year’s Sallah was exceptional.
