The First Man To Be Buried In Coffin According To The Bible

Joseph, the son of Jacob, was the first to be buried in a coffin. The Bible records the life of Joseph in the Book of Genesis. Most of the people who died in the Bible were buried in caves or graves.

Genesis 50:26 details how Joseph was buried, the next verse states how many years Jacob's son lived on earth. According to Genesis, Joseph lived 110 years before his death and was buried in Egypt.

Genesis 50:26

So Joseph died at the age of one hundred and ten years; and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.

Most burials in the Bible took place in graves or even caves, even though Jesus Christ was buried in the grave of a rich man when he died. The fact that Joseph was buried in a coffin is a sign that the coffin has been around for a long time.

Joseph's Tomb is a burial monument at the eastern entrance to the valley that separates the mountains of Gerizim and Ebal, 300 meters northwest of the Well of Jacob, on the outskirts of the West Bank city of Nablus. It has been revered for centuries by Samaritans, for whom it is the second holiest site, as well as Jews, Christians and Muslims, some of whom regard it as the site of the local medieval sheikh, Youssef Al-Dwijk.

At key moments in its long history, a site known as Yusuf's tomb has witnessed intense religious conflict in the area. Samaritans and Christians, who questioned the access to and title of the site in the early Byzantine period, often engaged in violent clashes.
