The Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta during the reading of the Mid-Year Budget for 2021 stated that the government is pleading to the people of Ghana to voluntarily donate GHS100.00 monthly towards the building of the National Cathedral. This came as a surprise to many Ghanaians because it was President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo who promised God to build him a cathedral, not Ghanaians. So why tasks Ghanaians to fulfil a promise you made to God?
Actually, the donation is not compulsory but some Christians including Nana Yaa Brefo of Angel TV thinks that it seems to be compulsory for Christians because if you don't donate, it makes feel like you are not a good Christian. Some Ghanaians including Afia Pokuaa of UTV stated that they are ready to sacrifice their salaries for building factories but not a National Cathedral.
Others also said that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his New Patriotic Party (NPP) should have cut their extravagant expenditure on luxurious lifestyles and used the money to assists in the construction of the cathedral. Tilapia the Cartoonist even think that the 15,000 Euros per hour President Akufo-Addo spent on his luxurious travels to France, Belgium and South Africa could have been used for some parts of this building.
In the cartoon above, President Akufo-Addo is having huge money on his back for foreign travels but he is begging for alms of GHS100 from the suffering public. You don't spend dollars on luxurious foreign travels and beg the citizenry for donations to build a cathedral.
The Islamic Religion did not beg for alms from the general public before putting up their National Mosque. In view of this, some Ghanaians including the comedian, Kwaku Sintim-Misa (KSM) are of the view that President Akufo-Addo is disgracing God. KSM asked President Akufo-Addo whether God has told him that he has no place to rest.
