2021 Ramadan achieves uniformity among Muslims as it begins today

The month of Ramadhan, which has a very spiritual significance in the Islamic ethos, a month in which the Holy Qur'an was revealed to the messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad (A. S), begins today and observed by Muslims all around the world. Muslims, in this month will have to go through each day of the month abstaining from food, water and beverages from down to dusk.

This year's Ramadhan falls exactly on the 13th March 2021, corresponding to the 1st day of the month of Ramadhan in the year 1442 after Higri in the Islamic calendar.

Muslims in Ghana did not have a uniform agreement on the date of commencement, some took religious notice from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia which had announced the sighting of the moon, others patiently waited for the National Chief Imam of Ghana, his eminence, Usumanu Sharubutu, which he came later around 9:30pm yesterday.

Despite the earlier seemingly misunderstanding amongst the Muslim community yesterday, it ended beautifully, thus; all Muslims in Ghana have uniformly begun this year's fasting.

Here in Ghana, the Chief Imam's office indicated that, the crescent, which signals the beginning of Ramadhan sighted in the Volta Region and Eastern region. The information paved way for the rest of Muslims, who had pinned their belief on sighting the crescent in Ghana to also join their fellows who were already in the mood of fasting by Saudi Arabia's announcement.

Fasting in the month of Ramadhan is one of the pillars of Islam. Any Muslim of age and ability shall fast to keep faith of the Islamic teachings. There are exception, and those who qualify under the exception rule shall not fast, but practice other means to compensate for it.

It involves two main meals. These are the down food, which is used to begin a day's fast known as 'Suhur' and the sunset food used to break the days fast as 'Iftar'.

We pray the Almighty Allah grant every Muslim the ability to pass through this spiritual journey successfully. May Allah accept this act of worship and grant the world peace.

Ramadhan Mubarak to all Muslims.
