Meet The Tallest Tribes of Africa

There are many different tribes on the African continent. Each tribe has distinctive characteristics that make them different from other tribes in the rest of the world. Height is one of the physical characteristics that can help differentiate. 


Some tribes are known for being exceptionally short, while others are known for being tall. Genetics is accountable for the various height variations across the globe. In Africa, the genetics of certain African tribes have placed them in a position where the world would see them as tall African tribes. Today we are going to look at the tallest tribes of Africa. 


The Somalis

The Somalis are natives of the Horn of Africa. They are a group of East Cushitic people who have similar heritage, culture, and history. They comprise one of the largest ethnic groupings on the continent of Africa and inhabit one of the huge landmasses occupied by a single ethnic group.

They live in Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Djibouti. Somalis are among the tallest people in Africa, standing at an average of 5 feet 9 inches tall many are over six feet tall with narrow faces and slender bodies. Some believe that the reason for their tall stature is their diet. Many Somalis are cattle herders and must have access to foods that contain much protein.


The Anuak Tribe

The Anuak Tribe is a Luo Nilotic ethnic group that lives in Ethiopia and South Sudan. The Anuak were part of the Tiny Family Group. They have recited in the Upper Nile Region for hundreds of years and believe their territory to be tribal land.

Thousands of people in the Anuak Tribe fled to the United States to escape wars. The Anuak people are believed to be Africa's third tallest ethnic group with an average male height of 5 feet 10 inches. This tribe has produced individuals with soaring heights of more than 7 feet.


The Tutsi Tribe

This African ethnic group is from the Great Lakes Region. The Tutsi are the second largest of Rwanda’s and Burundi's three major ethnic groups. Their ancestors were mostly cow bleeders thus their diet was high in protein and calcium which explains their towering height.

Furthermore, many Tutsis have a significant percentage of Nilotic DNA. Sudanese nilotes are regarded as one of the tallest people in the world despite their average height of 5 feet 11 inches many are 7 feet tall.


The Nuer Tribe

The Nuer are people who live largely in Southern Sudan near the Nile Rivers banks as well as in sections of Western Ethiopia. They are one of the most numerous ethnic groupings in Southern Sudan accounting for 16 of the overall population or 2 million people. 

Their history is linked to that of their neighbors the Dinka with whom they coexist and intermarry in the Ethiopian province of Gambella. They are one of Africa's and the world's tallest tribes with an astonishing average height of 6 feet.


The Maasai Tribe

The Maasai are an African indigenous ethnic group of semi-nomadic people that live in Kenya and Northern Tanzania because of their distinct traditions, rituals, and dress as well as their proximity and ties to East Africa's many national parks and reserves. The Maasai are among the most prominent African ethnic groups.

These bold lion hunters are also one of the world's tallest tribes with an average height of 6 feet 2 inches tall. Their legendary Adamu or jumping dance which most tourists enjoy is even more satisfying. Due to their incredible lengths that enable them to jump insanely feet in the air.

The Maasai diet traditionally consists of raw beef and milk from the many cows they raise. Scientists believe their exceptional height is related to their protein-rich diet.


The Dinka Tribe

The Dinka tribe is a South Sudanese Nilotic ethnic group that lives along the Nile. They are the most populous ethnic group in South Sudan and one of the three initial settlers.

The Dinka tribe extended across the region after defending their region against the Ottoman Turks and repelling slavery attempts by slave merchants attempting to convert them to Islam in the mid-1800s. The Dinka people also known as the basketball tribe appear to have some of the tallest individuals in Africa and the world in general. Studies show that the Dinka people have an average height of 6 feet 3 inches.

Manute Bol, a former NBA player who was one of the tallest in NBA history with a height of 7 feet 7 inches is a native Dinka. The majority of the population appears to be dark-skinned, slender, and tall.

Though there has been much discussion regarding the source of the Dinka people's tall stature. The most frequent explanation is their diet which is supposed to consist of milk and fresh foods. Their physical characteristics have made them stand out in a variety of ways and many tourists who visit them are captivated.
