Genesis 2:18,22,24, "And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” 22 Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. 24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh."
Marriage is an ordinance from God to men. Man can hardly tell what leads to a successful marriage but God. Anyone who tries to educate on marriage without reiterating what God said about it will surely err.
The scriptures above validate how God intends for man to marry, since being alone isn't good. Thus, man must leave his family and cleave to a wife of his choice.
Apart from celibates, the Bible advises all men and women to honour marriage. Hebrews 13:4, "Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled;....
It is an honour to get married. Having said that, it so crucial the one you choose to honour in marriage. If you are not going to regret getting married, then you must probably choose well. This is what God advised concerning the choice you make. 2 Corinthians 6:14, "Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?"
The first measure you put in place as a child of God is to avoid getting married to an unbeliever. It serves you good not to marry someone who doesn't share the same faith with you. You don't need to ask why. That the instruction came from God alone is enough. Failure to heed would mean you are ready to suffer all the troubles that come with joining in matrimony with the unbeliever.
However, you don't have to settle on that point alone. There are indeed some church folks who are not good marriage materials. In that regard, you also need to depend on God to help you make the right choice. How do you do that? Jeremiah 33:3, "‘Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’"
God is no liar. You can't call on Him and be met with disappointment. But make sure you are true to yourself and maintain a genuine mind to have a godly marriage. Once that is in place, you can be sure God will answer your prayer and lead you into the right hand. When the scripture says He will show you things you know not, it can mean causing you to meet a good partner you were oblivious of. He alone knows the heart of men. It is not impossible for Him to help you choose a good person.
Romans 8:14, "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God."
We are born of the Spirit (God) and He leads us accordingly. Because He can't make mistakes, you can be sure He will lead you to making the right choice.
As a Christian guy, don't make the choice without applying the information above. And as a Christian lady, don't just accept a proposal without heeding also - Let the person be a believer and also pray for God to lead you. Amen!
