Takoradi kidnapping of pregnant woman brouhaha: Police arrests husband and mother of victim

The Ghana Police has arrested the husband and mother of missing Takoradi woman, Josephine Panyin Mensah.

Mr. Michael Simmons and his mother in-law, Alice Essel were arrested because the police are suspicious that the alleged kidnapping of Josephine was staged by people closer to her after investigations proved that she was not pregnant, neither has she given birth.

This revelation has baffled Ghanaians because Josephine was alleged to be 9 months pregnant at the time of her kidnap.

The aid to the Western Regional Minister, Justice Acquah is said to have confirmed the arrest of Michael Simmons and his mother in-law. According to him, there is a suspicion of conspiracy somewhere.

He continued, "Because it was a syndicate, it was planned. One person cannot stage a kidnap. He had accomplices who helped in ensuring that they carry out their idea successfully."

The alleged kidnap of Josephine Panyin Mensah caused a stir in the atmosphere of the country as many sympathized with her family especially her husband who reported her missing on September 17.

The victim was later found by Kwesi Nana, a carpenter in Axim and sent to the Axim Government Hospital for medical treatment but doctors who examined her has said there is no indication that the victim was pregnant.

Residents of Columbia, a suburb of Takoradi where Josephine and her husband stays have taken to the street to invoke curses on anyone who supports the view that the victim was not pregnant particularly the Western Regional Minister, Mr. Darko-Mensah.

Mr. Acquah, the aide to the Western Regional Minister also said they cannot say for a fact that there was no kidnap but can only speak to the fact that there was no pregnancy because the police are still investigating whether there was indeed a kidnap.

In the meantime, Josephine has been transferred to the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Takoradi for another round of medical investigations to determine whether she was pregnant and has delivered or not.
