The Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region is one of the few areas in the country with many villages. One thing that is very paramount about the municipality is the bad nature of roads. Apart from the main highways from Takoradi to Agona Nkwanta and the Apimanim to Elubo Road, about eighty percent of the roads in the area are in very sorry conditions.
School children have no other option than to walk long distances before they can access quality education in the cities. They have made several complaints to authorities but to no avail. In this vein, Okada has become the main source of transportation in most areas. Two close communities struggling for good roads in the municipality are Chavene and Akwidaa. They are connected with a bridge on the Beokrom River.
For many years, the bridge has been helping commuters and other road users until the sad news happened. A driver of a truck loaded with chippings was moving to the community on a request when the vehicle veered off the road. Unfortunately for the driver, he was on the bridge, and in the process, it got broken. From the scene of the accident, the bridge broke into two and the truck landed in the river.
Prince Kwabena Obakrow, who is the Assemblymember for the area confirms that they erected the bridge through a community self-help project and the driver would have to find means to help them build it again. Some members of the community say, they will take the driver hostage until their bridge is fixed. They are threatening to sell the truck and use the money to fix the bridge if the driver refuses to comply with them.
Their only concern is how they will be able to convey their farm produce to the main market during the Christmas season. They are also worried about how they will be able to travel from their communities if the bridge is not fixed on time. Now, the driver of the truck is left with no other option than to cough money and help the community to fix the bridge. The truck is still locked in the river with no towing vehicle around. The police have been informed to ensure calm is restored for the two parties to agree on how the bridge can be fixed.
