A sad incident has occurred in Nyinahini in the Ashanti region. The Offin river in the Ashanti region passes through the said community and the river is the means of transport for residents in the area. Nine persons have drowned to death in the Offin river as a result of this. The bodies of four of them were retrieved on Friday when the incident happened but that of five of them has since not been found.
Divers have tried all they could from Friday till today, Sunday but the bodies of the five men cannot be found. According to an eyewitness, all the nine men were in one canoe trying to cross to the other side. He decided to go and look for another canoe since they were too many in one. Unfortunately by the time he returned the canoe had overturned and drowned the men. He mentioned the names of three of the men who cannot be found to be Alo, Joshua and Holy.
He said the names of the other two had escaped him. The mother of one of the missing men, Holy said that she does not live at the same place with her son. His son, Holy lives in Achiase and she lives in Kyenkyenase. She narrated that she received a call yesterday that his son had drowned in the Offin River at Nyinahini. She quickly rushed to the place of the incident to find the news to be true.
She said she stayed at the river bank till 6 pm waiting to find his son but to no avail. Today, she came early in the morning to wait for his son. She added that she will continue to remain at the banks of the Offin river till his son is found. The Unit Committee Chairman of the community, Daniel Adu pleaded with the government to provide them with more canoes since that is their only form of transportation. He added that the nine men were in one canoe because of the inadequate canoes in the community.
