Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, popularly known as Hushpuppi, has collaborated with some North Korean hackers considered to be the biggest bank robbers in the world.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) established the link between Hushpuppi and the North Koreans. A recent statement issued by the Justice Department said that Hushpuppi had participated in a " North Korean cyber robbery at a Maltese bank in February 2019".
In an earlier statement released in July 2020, the Justice Department called the attack a "$ 14.7 million cyber-robbery from a foreign financial institution."
The date and amount correspond to the attack on the Maltese bank in Valletta in February 2019. The Justice Department, in its latest statement released on Friday, February 19, 2021, further claimed that Hushpuppi participated in a "Cyber robbery perpetrated by North Korea in a Maltese bank in February 2019". The statement revealed that the Nigerian participated as a collaborator who worked with North Korean money launderer, Ghaleb Alaumary, 37, based in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.
The ministry added that "Alaumary has agreed to plead guilty to the charge, which was filed in the US District Court in Los Angeles on November 17, 2020." “Alaumary was a prolific money launderer for hackers engaged in ATM withdrawal systems, cyber bank robberies, business e-mail compromise (BEC) systems and other fraud schemes in line. Alaumary is also being sued for his involvement in a program separate from the BEC by the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Georgia."
Regarding the activities of the North Korean co-conspirators, Alaumary organized teams of co-conspirators in the United States and Canada to launder millions of dollars obtained through ATM withdrawals, including from BankIslami and a bank in India in 2018. “Alaumary also conspired with Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, aka“ Ray Hushpuppi ”, and others to launder funds from a North Korean cyber robbery of a Maltese bank in February 2019, ”the press release said.
