Five of them from Mankuma were arraigned before the District Court on Wednesday and were fined GH¢200.00 with the surety of owning their household latrines in one week time and to reappear in court on May 5, 2021, while three of them from Kakiase were also fined GHC200.00 with a surety of owning their household latrines in two weeks time and are to reappear in Court on May 12, 2021.
He warned that the Assembly would prosecute all persons caught violating sanitation practices regardless of their social standings or political affiliation and appealed to leaders in the communities not to plead on behalf of people arrested for sanitation offences.
Mr Abdallah said if all the people would be law abiding and be conscious about sanitation, there would be no need to arrest anybody.
He appealed to the Assembly members, and opinion leaders to educate residents to desist from from bad sanitation practices to maintain a clean environment.
Clean environment, according to him, was a shared responsibility and there was the urgent need to change attitudes.
Mr. Abdallah announced plans by the Assembly to scale up public education to create more awareness on sanitation, towards sustaining a clean District.
The Assembly in collaboration with Global Communities through the Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) programme was embarking on a campaign to stop open defecation and encourage the use of toilet and hand washing facilities in all homes.
“The situation is getting worse day by day, hence, the need to ensure that all households own a latrine”, he said.
