22 Years Reign As Asantehene: Otumfour Osei Tutu II

On Monday April 26, the Asantehene Otumfour Osei Tutu II celebrated 22 years on the Golden Stool.

The current Ashanti king born Barima Kwaku Duah on May 6, 1950 took over the stool as the 16th Asantehene on April 26, 1999 from Otumfour Opoku Ware II.

A product of Sefwi Wiaso and Osei Kyeretwie Senior High Schools and then Institute of Professional Studies(IPS) now University of Professional Studies Accra(UPSA), the Otumfour is also the chancellor of one of the top universities in Ghana, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology(KNUST).

There have been significant achievements under his reign as Asantehene and some of the highlights include the setting up of the Otumfour Education Fund which was instituted to enhance and support the educational needs of Ghanaians with several students benefitting from full scholarships and other forms of financial support.

Also setting up the Serwaa Ampem Foundation named after his mother and late Asantehemaa under the leadership of his wife Lady Julia Osei Tutu, key amongst the projects under the foundation was the focus on children with HIV/AIDS and family planning. Together with Lady Julia, the Otumfour has launched and undertaken several projects for the benefit and advancement of society.

He also played a key role in restoring peace in Dagbon as head of the 3 eminent chiefs appointed by former President of Ghana H.E. John Agyekum Kufour after the unfortunate murder of Ya Na Yakubu Andani, the regent of Dagbon in 2002 to intervene and negotiate in bringing peace between the two feuding factions, the Andani and Abudu royal families. This lead to the enskinment of the new overlord of Dagbon Ya Na Abukari Mahama on January 25, 2019. He has also settled several land disputes and chieftancy issues.

The Asantehene is well respected and has won admiration for his critical role in peace and stability of the nation Ghana which he is mindful plays a key role in governance.
