According to reports, the cesspit was left open after the sewage was removed earlier.
Joy news reported that an eyewitness confirmed that their attention was drawn when the victim's mother was crying when the child fell into the pit.
They then sought assistance to try to save her.
But it was too late to save the girl by the time they arrived with a ladder.
The girl's body, identified as Maafaaza Abu, was eventually pulled from the cesspool but was later pronounced dead at the Wa Municipal Hospital.
The dead was the hostel manager's daughter.
In the municipality, there are several cesspits that are left open, according to Rafiq Salam, the regional correspondent for JoyNews Upper West.
The presence of other young females makes it risky for the locals, who wouldn't be able to see you if you were wandering in the dark.
As per Islamic tradition, the body has subsequently been buried.
