Students of Miracle Senior High School located in the Sunyani East Municipality of the Bono region are left devastated and sad after one of their colleagues was found hanging herself in the school's dinning hall.
Identified as Leticia, the 16 year old final year student who would have written her final WASSCE exams in few months time sadly committed suicide.
Her fellow students found her livelss body hanging on the roof of the dining hall in the early hours of Monday.
The cause of this heartbreaking incident is yet to be determined. However, reports reveal that the body has been deposited at the Sunyani regional hospital while further investigation by the police is underway to demystify why such a young and beautiful lady would take her life.
Increasing cases of suicide is a worrying phenomenon in Ghana. Many of such cases have been linked to depression.
Globally, it is estimated that about 800,000 people die from suicide every year(BMC Health report, 2020).
Although suicide remains a crime in Ghana, much is not being done to curb the increasing cases in the country. To mitigate this phenomenon, the relevant authorities must invest more in public education and increase acess to mental health.
