The Member of Parliament (MP) for the South Dayi constituency in the Volta Region, has alleged that a team of military cum police officers, has verbally assaulted him to the point of threatening to even arrest him.
According to the MP, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the incident occurred over the weekend while traveling from the national capital Accra to his home region.
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) lawmaker alleged the team stationed at the twin barriers entering Juapong from Accra, had taken the better part of his time as a result of what he calls a “torturous vehicle search” being carried out on that stretch which according to him angered him.
The officers who were there routinely to search vehicles and passengers, apparently took more time than expected which did not go down well with passengers.
He claimed he spent a total of six hours during the search and so at a point, he had to confront the officers.
Unfortunately, his quest to draw their attention to the man hours being wasted on the exercise infuriated the officers leading to them allegedly verbally assaulting him.
The angry officers threat to arrest him did not happen even though the legislator said he wished that they carried it out.
Speaking on his ordeal on Twitter, the lawyer called on the authorities to stop the “The nightmarish subjection of people traveling to & fro Volta to needless police search especially on weekends has to stop NOW”.
I spent 6hrs not driving but simply going through these torturous and torturous vehicle search by these police cum soldiers.
I had to confront those manning the twin barriers when entering Juapong from Accra. They verbally assaulted me and threatened to arrest me. I wish they had.
The nightmarish subjection of people traveling to & fro Volta to needless police search especially on weekends has to stop NOW.
This is compounded by how innumerable these Police/military barriers are on the Tema-Kpong-Juapong road. Most of the officers too are rude to the people".
