Police raises eyebrows on car snatching

Drivers and car dealers are being urged to be extra vigilant as the police are seeing a dramatic increase in cases of car snatching, particularly in the capital city of Accra.

Car thieves have been prowling the Accra metropolis and everybody must be on the alert.

The Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Iddi Seidu, who made the call said statistics at the regional police command show that car theft -snatching is on the increase in the metropolis.

The call comes in the heels of the arrest of a mechanic over the alleged theft of a Toyota Tacoma pick-up vehicle.

The suspected car thief, Ebenezer Owusu, aged, 27 years is said to have approached the owner of the Toyota Tacoma pick-up vehicle at East Legon and expressed interest in buying the vehicle.

Owusu reportedly negotiated and agreed on the price. Unknown to the vehicle owner, the supposed buyer had ideas that were not noble – criminal intentions.

The suspect, under the guise of test-driving the vehicle before paying for it, fled with the car.

The owner of the Toyota Tacoma pick-up vehicle could not believe what was unfolding before his eyes, pulled himself together and quickly placed a telephone call to the police. The response of the police was swift.

One of the police mobile patrol teams was quickly assigned to chase the vehicle.

Fortunately, a tracking device had been installed in the Toyota Tacoma pick-up vehicle by the owner and that helped the police mobile patrol team to catch the suspected car thief – Owusu.

The incident happened on Monday, November 29, 2021. This comes amid preparations by the people for the Christmas festivities. The Regional Police Commander said, “there are certain categories of crimes that are coming to our attention, which is the snatching of vehicles.”

He underlined their unwavering determination to provide adequate security protection to enable the people to celebrate the yuletide in peace.

They have upped their operations and they have put in place strong and effective security measures to safeguard life and property.

He said, there was no way, the police would allow miscreants to hold the society to ransom.
