John Dumelo: If One Or Two Landlords Are Arrested, The Rest Will Stop.

The cost of renting a room in Ghana, especially in Accra, has become a very grueling experience for most ordinary Ghanaians. Aside from the exorbitant and vexatious cost of accommodation, most landlords flout the rent laws and demand as high as two to three years of advance rent in some cases.

Recently, most landlords across the country have raised their cost of rent. Citing the recent high inflation, high cost of fuel, and the galloping prices of building materials as the reasons and basis for increasing rent. This has left many tenants, especially in the Nation's capital of Accra in a state of despair.

On this backdrop, Ghanaian actor turned politician, John Dumelo called for the arrest of landlords who demand 2 years' advance rent. He believes if one or two are arrested, the rest will stop making the outrageous demands.

His suggestion pertains to the rent laws which prohibit landlords from demanding more than six months advance at a time. The level at which this law is flouted in the country makes one wonder what exactly Rent Control as a state institution is doing about it.

Without Governments taking proactive measures to provide more affordable housing, private landlords will continue to fleece tenants of their hard-earned incomes.

Kindly share with us in the comments section, how much you currently pay for rent and whether it is okay for you or it's too high.
