As part of their effort to minimize the rate of fraud, the MTN recently made it their policy for individuals to have their Voter's ID before they could cash out their money.
Information reaching us now indicates that the MTN has gone a step further in their attempt to fight the perturbing issue of MTN Momo fraud. This time MTN Momo agents would be required to compare names of the voter's ID card to names of the MTN cash wallet. If there happens to be no correlation, then the transaction would be terminated.
The above was disclosed by Mr Hini, the chief executive officer of MTN Mobile Money Limited. Mr Hini indicated that the initiative would take effect from Tuesday night. He said: ''Beginning from tonight (Tuesday), the additional layer would be activated and will make it possible for agents to compare the name on the wallet with the name on the ID and determine the way forward.''
Mr Hini added that MTN Momo agents who were not observing the "No ID, No Cash out Policy'' have been suspended. The only option left for these MTN Momo agents is for them to sign a bond of compliance according to the chief executive officer of MTN Momo Mobile Money Limited. The bond of compliance wouldn't be the only means of ensuring that the right thing is done by these Mobile Money agents. Mr Hini said that the activities of these Mobile Money agents with regard to transaction would be closely monitored by people walking in town. He added a word of caution that MTN Mobile Money agents who are caught flouting the ''No ID, No Cash Out Policy'' for a second time would be banned from serving as MTN Mobile Money agents.
To prevent individuals from becoming victims of MTN Mobile Money fraud, Mr Hini urged the populace not to give out their PIN numbers, approve of any transaction which was not initiated by them and not to regard any person with different telephone number as MTN working officials apart from the telephone number 0244300000.
