Residents at Semeraboi in the Amenfi Central District of the Western Region of Ghana are currently mourning. Three of their citizens have unfortunately died with over seventeen others battling for their lives through a road accident which many are blaming the driver for being the cause.
The bus with registration number, GN 9721-17 had loaded passengers from Kumasi and was heading towards Semeraboi. The driver took off around 9 pm on Friday, July 16, 2021, with a smooth drive. But the passengers started hearing an unusual noise in the car and prompted the driver to check but he ignored.
At around 10: 30 pm, the driver allegedly started dozing off in what most of the passengers believe was due to tiredness. He was prompted to rest but he assured the passengers that everything was under control.
After Obuasi, a sprinter vehicle was on top speed coming from the opposite direction. The Semeraboi bus driver tried to apply his brakes but failed. The only option was to crash into the sprinter bus in a deadly accident that has left several passengers dead with many battling for their lives.
The bus was damaged beyond repairs with three of the passengers, unfortunately, dying instantly. Personnel from The Ghana National Fire Service and the Ghana Police Service were immediately called to save the situation. The bus had to be cut into pieces before the passengers were rescued. Over seventeen of them are currently at the Dunkwa government hospital receiving treatment. The driver has been rebuked by some of the passengers for sleeping whilst driving and blames him for causing the accident.
Passengers in the sprinter bus, according to report were unhurt since their vehicle was not severely affected. The police have begun official investigations into the cause of the accident and apply the necessary sanctions.
Most of the long-distance vehicles have been advised to use two drivers so that one will take over whilst the other is tired but the call has not been adhered to. This accident could not have happened if there were two drivers on the bus.
